Gasol statistics are impressive in themselves. But his contributions to database nba.com are hardly the reason the Lakers are the NBA champions. The Lakers won in large part because Gasol was able to coexist with Kobe Bryant. The preceding sentence does not sound like a great compliment. Right now I'm co-exist with my pants and not no one seems particularly excited. But Bryant is much more difficult to treat than a pair of pants. It is notorious for his bad temper, prone to selfishness and has the personality of my toothbrush. He did not hit a punch is a victory for any player.
Gasol has taken this coexistence to another level. Bryant and he (and Odom and Fisher and all those guys who are really sick of seeing on television) is congratulated each other, partly because Gasol did not let his ego get in his goal of winning a championship. Many players with his ability and pedigree would have required more shots or angry when Bryant would have missed it for 43 th consecutive time remain in place. Gasol, no.
